Gallery Manjm - Haifa Culture Lab - is pleased to invite you to the opening of Manal Mahamid’s solo exhibition, "Gazella, Gazella, Gazella, Palestinian Gazalle"; curated by Rula Khoury; on November 11, 2017, at Gallery Manjam from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.
For Mahamid, the uniqueness of the gazelle as metaphor lies within misrepresenting imperfection. She explains: “facing identity exclusion and distortion of personal definition is like a fingerprint in the remnants of individual and collective memory.” It is an engraving that leads to impermanence. In the exhibition, the gazelle’s image is recurrent, as is the title, indicating obsessiveness with the state of things. The white gazelle reflects pure beauty intertwined with imperfect reliability, rendering the ugly, suffering, and emptiness, or absence of the self, as perfection.
Manal Mahamid, born in "Moawia”, a Palestinian village of many in the Um El-Fahem area, in 1976. Mahamid is a contemporary Palestinian artist residing in Haifa. She earned her Master’s in Fine Arts at the University of Haifa in 2006, which was made possible by obtaining a scholarship of Excellence from the university. She obtained a degree in Museology and Curation from the University of Tel Aviv four years later. Her work has been part of several exhibitions in London, Chicago, Cairo, Dusseldorf, Haifa, Ramalah, Um El Fahim, Jericho in over 50 group exhibitions.
